Sr. volleyball teams finish year, some with medals

Both senior girls volleyball teams attend provincial playoffs and boys bring home bronze medals.

UNITY—The past two weekends have been what most high school senior volleyball players have been waiting for, provincial playoffs. The girls played over the weekend of Nov. 15 and 16, while the boys played a week later.

In the 1A division, the Kerrobert Rebels senior girls advanced to the provincial tournament, hosted by Colonsay. The team had to face teams from LeRoy, Rouleau, Maymont and Allan in the round robin. The Rebels secured their only win of the weekend on day two against Allan, before facing defeat against Annaheim in the playoffs.

Locally, the senior girls McLurg Broncs travelled to Outlook for the 2A division. They lost their first three games in the round robin on day one of the tournament. They came back strong for their last game against the home team, the LCBI Bisons. This put them in fourth place in their pool, leaving them to play against Gravelbourg in the playoffs. Unfortunately, the Broncs were unable to gain the sets they needed to continue in the 2A tournament.

The McLurg boys’ team travelled to Lashburn for their playoffs Nov. 22 and 23. Throughout the pool standings, the Broncs held the lead, winning all four of their games. In the playoffs, they beat out Englefeld before going head-to-head with Saskatoon Christian School. The boys won the second set before being trumped in the third. This gave the Wilkie boys one last opportunity to play in the bronze medal game against Langenburg. With only one set lost, the Wilkie Broncs won the game and claimed the bronze medal title.

In the 3A division, the UCHS senior girls played in Regina. Much like the Wilkie girls, the Warriors were unable to win any games on day one but came back in their first game on day two. They played against Carnduff in the playoffs, where they were defeated.

For the senior UCHS boys, who played in Esterhazy, they lead their pool with four wins before the playoffs on day two. Clavet was their first opponent, where the Warriors took the win after three sets. They then were set to play against the hosting team, but were unable to get ahead of them, landing them in the bronze medal game. The Warriors were then matched against Waldheim, where the game went into the third set. The Warriors beat out Waldheim, taking the bronze title for the 3A division.
