Second-place finishes at regionals send trio of local teams to provincials

Senior girls' volleyball teams head to provincial tournaments Nov. 15 and 16.

WILKIE-- Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association held their senior girls’ regional volleyball tournaments across the province Nov. 9 to determine the teams who would qualify for the provincial finals. With second place finishers advancing along with the regional champions, the Kerrobert Rebels moved on in 1A, the Wilkie Broncs in 2A and the Unity Warriors in 3A.

Regionals saw some exciting rematches from conferences. In Fox Valley, the 1A regional final was a repeat of the conference final in Marengo.

After winning their pools and their semifinal matches, Kenaston and Kerrobert faced each other across the net, once again competing for a championship. Once again, it was Kenaston who came out with the win and Kerrobert in second place.

The Rebels, and the Kenaston Kodiaks, travel to Colonsay and Allan this weekend for the 10-team provincial tournament, with a goal of reaching the playoffs once again in order to compete for a provincial medal. They start off with a game against Maymont at 1 p.m. Nov. 15.

In the 2A regionals at Langham, Wilkie and Neilburg also came up against each other for a repeat match, but in the semifinal. Wilkie had finished with the win in Pool B while a loss to Langham in Pool A meant Neilburg finished in second place, leading to the semifinal matchup.

These two evenly matched and competitive teams took the first set to extra points, with Wilkie eventually coming out on top 26-24. Now leading the game 1-0, Wilkie then was able to win the second set by 25-14 to move on to the regional final.

The final saw host Langham beat the Broncs, but both teams advanced to the 2A provincial championships in Outlook. The Broncs will start the tournament with a game against Wadena at 1 p.m. Nov. 15.

In the 3A SHSAA regionals, the Unity Warriors finished second in their pool. In an exciting semifinal against Makwa which went to three sets, they came out with a 15-12 win in the third set to move on to the regional championship game.

It was Waldheim who claimed the regional title but Waldheim, Unity and third-place Makwa all move on to provincials. At provincials, Waldheim and Makwa are both in pool B while Unity faces four new opponents in pool A, starting off with a 1 p.m. game Nov. 15 against Kipling.
