KERROBERT – As many high school volleyball teams are preparing for regional playoffs, banners are also being handed out to some of the teams that competed in the 2023-24 school year, including one for the senior girls’ volleyball team at Kerrobert Composite School.

Each year, the Battle West Athletic Association accepts nominations for teams in all sports in both the junior and senior categories who emulate good sportsmanship through actions and play. The nominations are then voted on and a winner is selected in each category, where the Kerrobert team was awarded the Battle West Athletics Association Senior Sportsmanship Award.

Candice Kraft, principal of KCS and coach of the volleyball team, was not aware they had been nominated for the award.

“Last season, they were one win away from advancing to the provincial playoffs. As a team, they stayed poised and respectful when battling against competitive teams. They accepted the close calls, even when they didn’t fall in our favour. The girls accepted hard losses while keeping their pride intact,” she said.

There were four players who departed from the team, two of whom graduated and two who moved away. Of the remaining players, two more will graduate.

“The girls that came back this year are still showing the same sportsmanship they had last year. It’s a big component of our team and core covenants for our school as well,” added Kraft.

The team was presented the banner at a school assembly by the Battle West Athletics Association Vice President, Troy Snider.
