UNITY – While the volleyball season starts to come to an end, senior high school teams are just getting started.
The senior boys’ teams in Unity and Wilkie both hosted conferences on Nov. 9, each with three visiting teams. Wilkie welcomed Lashburn, Neilburg and Luseland while Unity hosted Maidstone, Canoe Lake and Makwa.
With much excitement at both schools, spectators were treated to a show of sportsmanship, camaraderie and remarkable volleyball. As both hosts took first place at conferences, teams from Lashburn and Maidstone will also be advancing to regionals on Nov. 16.
New to the 3A division, Makwa coach Tony Fineblanket said his team has experienced a rollercoaster start as many of the players are new to the sport.
“I tell them they have the skills and they can do it but they need to communicate more. Communication is key. They have to be vocal out there because it also helps the setter know where you are in that court and helps when they are not running into each other,” he said.
Although they did not advance after conferences, Fineblanket said their season is not over yet.
“We will still play a couple more tournaments right after this. We will compete in pre-battle of the bands. One of the First Nations schools wants to host it, so we will practice there before we travel to Regina for the FSIN U17 tournament.”
The Wilkie Broncs and Lashburn will travel for the 2A regionals in Ministikwan while Unity and Maidstone will compete in Clavet at the 3A regionals, all on Nov. 16.
