‘The hardest part is over’: Regina Pats' head coach Brad Herauf reflects on rebuilding WHL season

The 2024-2025 Regina Pats season came to a close with back-to-back losses to the playoff-bound Brandon Wheat Kings.

The Pats, who iced the youngest line-up in the Western Hockey League, finished the season in 10th place in the Eastern Conference with a 16-44-5-3 record.

Regina Pats head coach Brad Herauf shared a message to the fans on the 620 CKRM Bennett Dunlop Ford Regina Pats postgame show.

“The hardest part is over. This plan is to put a consistent product on the ice that fans want to be proud of. We feel the exact same way the fans have the last two years. It's not just a snap of the fingers we've got some high-end picks coming in. We're the youngest team in the league and it's gonna be really exciting.”

Before the players departing for the season the Regina Pats handed out their year end individual awards.

Pats Service Award – Ken Stromberg

This year wrapped up Ken Stromberg’s 40th season as an off-ice official with the Regina Pats organization, dating back to 1985. Ken leads all the off-ice officials and has done a variety of jobs with the Pats over the last four decades.

Player of the Year – Kelton Pyne

Pyne, 19, played in a career-high 44 games, going 13-22-4-3 with a 3.56 G.A.A and .887 SV% with one shutout. The White City, Sask product ranked 12th in the WHL in both minutes played (2510) and appearances. Pyne also reached 100 career games on March 15, becoming just the 18th goaltender in Pats history to play 100+ games with the franchise.

Charles Johnston Memorial Top Defenceman – John Babcock

Babcock, 20, was seventh amongst all WHL defencemen in shots on goal this season with 190. The North Vancouver, B.C. product had a career-high 26 points (2G-24A) in 63 games, reaching the 250 game mark on March 18. Babcock finished his WHL career with 77 career points (10G-67A) in 252 games.

Rick Rypien Memorial Award (Unsung Hero) – Dayton Deschamps

Deschamps, 17, was a physical and reliable defenceman for the Pats during his rookie season. The Saskatoon, Sask product tallied six points (4 G-3A) in 56 games, and led all rookies in penalty minutes (69).

Nick Pappas Rookie of the Year – Zachary Lansard

Lansard, 16, led all Pats rookies in scoring with 19 points (7G-12A) in 54 games this season.

Hub Bishop Most Sportsmanlike – Ephram McNutt

McNutt, 19, was in the penalty box the least amount of times this season, with 14 penalty minutes in 52 games. The Ponoka County, Alberta product also led all Pats defencemen in scoring with 29 points (6 G-23A) in 52 games.

Mike Kartusch Community Service Award – Kolten Bridgeman

Bridgeman, 18, never missed a community event, either during the offseason or throughout the regular season. The Regina product even stepped it up in 2024-25, joining as a Hockey Gives Blood Player Ambassador, hosting a Pats blood drive with John Babcock on March 12. Bridgeman has been a leader on and off the ice, helping with minor baseball and hockey practices, and giving back to his hometown.

Bill Hicke Most Popular Player – Kelton Pyne

Pyne won the Most Popular Player online vote this season, collecting the majority of the votes.

Scholastic Player of the Year – Dayton Deschamps

With a very impressive overall Grade Point Average of 94.8%, Deschamps completed Francais Immersion Social 30, Pre-Calculus 30, Physics 30, Catholic Studies 30 to date, and is currently completing English Language Arts 30, Chemistry 30, and Francais Immersion 30.

Torchy Schell Top Scorer Award – Julien Maze

Maze, 17, led all Pats players in scoring with a combined 44 points (12G-32A) in 64 games between the Pats and Everett Silvertips.
