UNITY— The Unity Composite High School senior curling team are hosting three events with the Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association (SHSAA), which started with the BattleWest district on Feb. 11 and 12, followed by regionals at the end of the month and provincials in early March.
UCHS hosted 17 teams from the BattleWest district throughout four different events, with two teams competing in the open mixed curling and one double team.
“We have Grade 9 students also competing in our senior districts, as well as our senior mixed team. They have all been curling in weekend bonspiels and exhibition games, and so far they have had a good season while preparing for the three events,” said coach Lauren Gartner.
“We have spent the past couple of months practicing and playing exhibition games to prepare us. The curlers have been working hard and are ready to represent our school at these events,” she added.
At the regional level, it was the BattleWest district’s turn to host the tournament, splitting the events between two locations.
“We will host the mixed and doubles teams while the boys’ and girls’ teams will play in North Battleford.”
The bid for mixed curling provincials was submitted last year by vice-principal Ken Parker and curling coach Kyla Snell, which was confirmed in May 2024.
“Hosting events like these is a great way to showcase our facilities and our community. We always enjoy the opportunity for athletes from around the district, region and province to come together to demonstrate skill, sportsmanship and the love of the game,” added Gartner.
