Regina Pats ready for puck drop on second half of WHL season in Brandon

The Regina Pats finished their first-half schedule strong, going 2-1-2 in their last five games (16GF-17GA), all decided by two goals or less. The Regiment is coming off a 4-3 overtime loss to the Moose Jaw Warriors on December 14.

Jace Egland scored the Pats 2024 Teddy Bear Toss goal, as over 3000 stuffed toys rained onto the Brandt Centre ice. Zach Pantelakis scored his first with the Pats, and Caden Brown’s tally with 1:02 left in regulation forced extra-time. Kelton Pyne made 26 saves in the loss. The shots were an even 30-30. Regina was 0-3 on their power play and 3-4 on their penalty kill.

Meanwhile, the Brandon Wheat Kings are coming off a 5-4 shootout loss to the Moose Jaw Warriors. Marcus Nguyen (1G-1A) and Nicolas Johnson (2A) led the way with multi-point games, while Ethan Eskit made 25 saves. Caleb Hadland, Luke Shipley and Giorgos Pantelas rounded out the scoring for the Wheat Kings. The final shots were 43-30 for the Wheat Kings. The Wheat Kings were 1-2 on their power play and 2-3 on their penalty kill.

The Wheat Kings are now 4-1-1 over their last six games.

WHO TO WATCH

Zach Panelakis scored his first goal since September 20 and his first as a Pat last game. In addition, Caden Brown has scored in four of his last five games and has seven points (4G-3A) in 11 games with the Pats. Veteran defenceman John Babcock leads all WHL defencemen in shots on goal with 108.

Marcus Nguyen leads the Wheat Kings in scoring with 31 points (15G-16A) in 29 games, as well as points in three straight games (2G-3A). In addition, former Pat Matteo Michels has eight points (5G-3A) in his last six games. Overall, he has 26 points (12G-14A) in 29 games this season. Michels also leads the Wheat Kings in plus-minus with a rating of +17.

COMING UP

The Pats begin their second-half home schedule with a matchup against the Saskatoon Blades on Saturday, December 28. That night, the Pats will wear special-edition Nickelodeon-themed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles jerseys.
