We are one week away from the Canadian Football League draft, and teams are tinkering with their rosters.
It is a busy time for football operations staff around the league as teams put the final touches on their training camp rosters, draft lists, and negotiation lists.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders are doing just that and raised some eyebrows when it was leaked that they had reportedly put quarterback Trey Lance on their negotiation list. Lance, a former third overall pick in the NFL draft, was looking for a job after not being re-signed by the Dallas Cowboys after spending the last two years as their number three quarterback.
Lance has signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Chargers, and even if that doesn’t work out, legendary Saskatchewan Roughriders Quarterback Darian Durant thinks he could excel in Riderville.
“This is going to sound crazy, but I honestly think that he would be a better CFL quarterback than an NFL quarterback. The system he played in college was a wide-open 4-5 receiver system, the same thing you will do in the CFL. But when he got into camp with San Francisco, and I was reading some articles from Dallas and the past training camp for them, Lance struggled with tight window throws and the tight coverage of these NFL DBs. He needs to be on a bigger field where he can run around, use his athleticism a little, and have these bigger windows. So, I really think that the CFL game is tailor-made for him.”
