Three local baseball teams earn provincial champion status

Baseball season ends with three provincial titles for Unity, Luseland and Macklin provincial teams.

UNITY – Many provincial championships for Baseball Sask wrapped up over the July 26 weekend across the province, where three local teams were victorious in claiming the provincial champions title.

In the U13 AA division, the Unity Cardinals and the Luseland Dust Devils travelled to Moose Jaw for the Tier 3 tournament. Although the neighbouring communities did not play against each other in the round-robin, both teams were successful in making it to the semifinal game to play against each other.

The Devils stirred up the dust during the game and grounded the Cardinals with a 12-6 win, advancing them to the gold medal game against the Saskatoon Sandlot Cardinals. The Saskatoon team were a worthy opponent, but the Devils were able to claim the title with a 4-3 win.

At the U13 AA Tier 6 tournament in Moosomin, the Wilkie Brewers started off strong with a win against the Carlyle Cardinals. Their second game against the host team, the Moosomin Rangers, saw the team fumble as they lost 16-4. After shaking off the loss, they won against the Kamsack Cyclones and advanced to the semifinals. They faced the Saskatoon Royals 64’s and were unable to make the runs they needed to move onto the gold game, coming home with bronze instead.

The U18 Macklin Lakers were in Martensville for the U18 AA Tier 3 Provincial Championship. These young men worked well together as a team, dominating every game they played throughout the weekend. The Lakers went into the gold medal game undefeated and continued their streak as they played against the Saskatoon Blue Jay Bombers in the final. With a final score of 8-7, the Lakers were crowned champions.

Closer to home, the Unity Cardinals hosted the U18 AA Tier 4 Provincial Championships, where they claimed the provincial title as well. For full details on their tournament, check out this article.
