SWIFT CURRENT — As spring fever swept through Swift Current, the city welcomed the Saskcup volleyball tournament, which took place from March 1 to 3.

The tournament was held at the Kinetic Park's Stockade and the Swift Current Comprehensive High School gym, marking the Sundogs' first time hosting the prestigious volleyball event.

The 17-and-under tournament brought together 28 teams from across the province, with each team comprising 10-11 players plus coaches and staff. This influx of visitors resulted in a significant economic boost to the community, with 25-26 teams staying in the area.

Aaron Demyen, executive director of SaskVolleyball, expressed his delight at hosting the tournament in Swift Current.

"We're always on the lookout for facilities that can cater to our large events, and the high school and the new Stockade facility fit the bill perfectly," stated Demyen. "With six courts at our disposal, we can accommodate our 17U division with ease."

Demyen also highlighted the rapid growth of volleyball in the region, citing a 10% annual increase in participation over the past 12 years.

Kevyn Kristmanson, vice chair of the Sundogs Volleyball Club, attributed the growth to the club's success on the court, which has led to increased interest and a loyal following.

He credited the club's successful teams, as well as the excellent programs in place at local elementary and high schools, for promoting the sport and fostering growth among young athletes.

Coach Travis Cuthbert, who has witnessed the evolution of club volleyball, noted that the commitment level required of players has increased significantly over the years. However, the kids are still passionate about the sport, and the dedication of the 17U Sundogs team, comprising players from Swift Current and surrounding towns, is a testament to that.

Two players, Dahlia Hermanson and Reese Holderbein, shared their experiences playing in the Sask Cup. Hermanson appreciated the opportunity to play in front of friends and family, while Holderbein relished the support of the home crowd and the team's resilience in the face of adversity.

In the end, the 17U Sundogs emerged victorious in Division 2, winning 5 out of 7 games and securing a 9th-place finish.

The tournament was deemed a huge success for both the city and the Sundogs organization.
