PREECEVILLE - The Preeceville Curling Club is scheduled to open its doors to a new season of curling by the end of November with excited curlers taking to the ice.
Monday afternoons will feature an afternoon league, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings will be a four-on-four open league, Thursdays are a two-on-two curling and Friday is designated as fun curling night.
An open bonspiel will be held on Feb. 2-9, 2025. Other bonspiels have not been scheduled at the time of release.
The curling club will be hosting a wing night on Dec. 20 in conjunction with the Roughrider Snowmobile Club’s raffle draw. The AGM will be hosted on Nov. 25 and the club will also host a poker night on Nov. 16. Individuals can contact Tim Olson to pre-register for the poker night. The club has also discussed doing some upgrades/renovations but nothing was scheduled at the time of release.
The tradition of curling began in 1934 and has faced many challenges over the 85 years but the passion for curling has remained in Preeceville, according to members.
Rodney Serhan is the ice maker/caretaker for the rink.

The original curling rink was first proposed by Alfred Buck and Jack Long in the summer of 1934, states information given in the Town of Preeceville history book. The rink opened on Jan. 4, 1935 with fees set at $5 for those who had their own rocks and $8 for those who did not own their own rocks. Doug Bentley and his dray of horses hauled hot water from the creamery in three 45-gallon drums to flood the ice.
Curling enthusiasm was so great that another sheet of ice had to be built in 1937. In 1954, a new rink with three sheets of ice was built. Artificial ice was installed in 1977 and, through the years, considerable work and renovations were done to improve the rink, according to the history book information
