Saskatchewan Roughriders re-sign Canadian safety Nelson Lokombo

The Saskatchewan Roughriders and pending free agent safety Nelson Lokombo have agreed to a contract extension. Lokombo was the Riders first-round pick, second overall in the 2021 CFL Draft and has spent the last four seasons with Saskatchewan.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders and pending free agent safety Nelson Lokombo have agreed to a contract extension.

Lokombo was the Riders first-round pick, second overall in the 2021 CFL Draft and has spent the last four seasons with Saskatchewan.

Lokombo played all 18 regular-season games in 2024, starting in Week 1 at halfback and then transitioned to safety for the remainder of the season.

The 25-year-old set a career-high in defensive tackles with 44 while recording one tackle for loss, five pass knockdowns, one forced fumble and his first career sack.

The Abbotsford, B.C. native also made his first CFL interception in 2024 with the Roughriders in the West Semi-Final game against B.C. when he grabbed a pass from Vernon Adams Jr. late in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Prior to joining the Roughriders, Lokombo played three seasons with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.

In 2019, Lokombo was awarded the U-Sports Presidents’ Trophy as the country’s most outstanding defensive player. He was also named Canada West’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player, a Canada West All-Star and a U Sports first-team All-Canadian. 

In 30 collegiate games with the Huskies, Lokombo made 115 tackles,10 interceptions, six tackles for loss, three sacks, and two forced fumbles.
