Back-to-back padded practices for Roughriders

Riders offence finds the deep ball.

Today’s Workout Highlights:

The wind was howling, and the pads were popping when players hit the turf at Mosaic Stadium. Yes, for a second day in a row Head Coach Corey Mace had the players in full gear to start the work-out session.

The practice started with the daily walk thrus for the offence and the defence.

After the walk-thru period the team moved into their stretching and warm-up period.

The team would then break back into individual positions for fundamental and foundational work.

Next up on the practice plan was an offence vs. defence session. The breakdown:

  • The first carry was a hand-off to A.J. Ouellette from Trevor Harris and after a nice cut at the line he would break it for a big play.
  • On the next play Harris would find Samuel Emilus in the open in the flat for a first down competition.
  • Harris next play is a hand-off on a sweep to the far-side of the field.
  • The next play sees Ouellette attempt a run through the middle but not much room there for a minimal gain.
  • Next in at Quarterback was Shea Patterson his pass to the nearside was complete. Stopped immediately, however, by DeMarcus Fields and Nelson Locombo.
  • After the competition, Patterson would look near-side again for Ajou Ajou. He was met after the catch by C.J. Reavis.
  • Antonio Pipkin would get the next turn at Quarterback, and he would get the ball to Joe Robustelli for a nice gain.
  • The offence would line up for a second play with Pipkin at the helm. AND with a hard count he would hand the ball off to Frankie Hickson. No movement today by the D Line on the hard count.
  • Mason Fine would enter the field for the next play his hand off to Clint Ratkovich was good for a few yards off tackle.
  • Jack Coan would come in next and once again hand the ball off. This time to Frankie Hickson.

That was the final play of the period as the team would then head into a special teams work period. The main focal point of the session was punt protection and punt cover.

Following that portion of practice Head Coach Corey Mace would head out onto the field to start 1 on 1 drills. The linemen went to the north end zone to battle. While the QB’s, Receivers and DB’s went into 7 on 7 play. Here’s the 7 vs. 7.

  • Play one Trevor Harris is complete to A.J. Ouellette.
  • Harris would then fire high intended for Frankie Hickson.
  • After that pass attempt Harris would look to the near side and find Samuel Emilus on a hitch route.
  • Harris would reach blitz on the next play and fire underneath to Hickson.
  • Mason Fine’s turn to wok the offence was next. On his first pass he would find Kian Schaeffer-Baker.
  • The next play would see Fine pump and then throw complete to Ouellette.
  • Ouellette would be the next target on the next play as well as with Jack Coan in at Quarterback.
  • Antonio Pipkin would throw complete underneath to Shawn Bane Junior.
  • Shea Patterson is in next at Quarterback with a complete pass to Clint Ratkovich.

After the pass and one more compete one-on-one the team would get back into a team’s session. Here is how it went down:

  • Trevor Harris would hand the ball off to A.J. Ouellette.
  • Next play would have Harris move under centre and he would toss a ball to the flat to Ouellette.
  • Following the competition Harris would spot Samuel Emilus through the seam for a touchdown on a nice timing route.
  • Frankie Hickson would get the carry on the next play and with a nice stutter step he would find a whole and break through the line for a nice gain.
  • Harris stays in for the next play with a stop motion. Defence stays onside. He would then find Ajou Ajou in the near flat for a nice complete.
  • Mason Fine would then get a chance to come in his first play a deep ball to Geronimo Allison that drops down into his hands. Nice through, but Allison cannot squeeze the ball.
  • The next pass is complete to KeeSean Johnson.
  • Kian Schaeffer-Baker hauls in a pass on the next play from Shea Patterson.
  • Patterson on the next play does a nice job to avoid the rush and find Jerreth Sterns for the completion.
  • Long pass attempt for Geronimo Allison on the next play. Defended well by Katley Joseph. Slips through Allison’s fingers.
  • Jack Coan gets the next chance, and he looks to stretch the field for KeeSean Johnson but it’s just beyond his reach on the post pattern.
  • Next play for Coan is an underneath pas to Ajou Ajou after the offensive line does a nice job to hold off the defensive line.
  • After the first down Antonio Pipkin would come in and throw complete in the flat to Sterns.
  • Pipkin would then throw a seam pass to the far side of the field complete to Samuel Emilus.

After another long competition Head Coach Corey Mace would call for another special teams walk thru period.

Following the special teams work the Green and White would head to the south end of the field for another teams period:

  • Jack Coan would get the first reps at Quarterback. His hand off to the right side to A.J. Ouellette was stopped for little or no gain.
  • Coan would then find Ouellette out of the backfield after not finding a receiver open downfield.
  • Shea Patterson would come in next his first pass was complete to Geronimo Allison.
  • After a five-yard gain on first down Patterson would call his receivers to the line and throw far-side complete to Ajou Ajou.
  • Coan’s pass was another completion for a first down this time to Joe Robustelli.
  • Patterson next would pull the ball down with pressure in his face from T.J. Brunson for a gain of a couple.
  • The next play would have Patterson find Lipscomb in the flat for close to a first down.
  • Mason Fine would get the opportunity next and his pass to Mitchell Picton was in and out of the receiver’s hands and through the hands of Katley Joseph incomplete.
  • Fine’s next pass is a deep post route intended for Sterns that is broken up neatly by the DB

AND that would conclude today’s practice.

Break-out Play of the Day:

Trevor Harris at Quarterback would look short drawing the DB’s up. However, reading that he would reach back and fire it over the top and find Samuel Emilus streaking into the end zone for a touchdown.

The One to Watch:

Receiver Joe Robustelli. The late addition to training camp has been making plays whenever given the opportunity. Couple that with his athleticism and he has been turning heads. Not bad for a player who didn’t play the game for more than a decade before college.
