WEYBURN – The Weyburn Red Wings are officially dropping the puck on a new season with a community celebration. The organization will hold a tailgate party to precede the home opener against the Yorkton Terriers on Sept. 19.
The festivities will kick off at 4 p.m. with a puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m.
“We want to start the season off with a bang, and get the whole community out to celebrate,” said Ryder Burns, sales and marketing director for Weyburn Red Wings, SJHL, “The energy the building had in our playoff run was amazing, and we hope to build on that hype at the start of the season.”
Burns said the tailgate party is relatively new but is expanding.
“The home opener never really had a tailgate party until last year,” he said. “It first started last year to increase hype for our home opener. It wasn't as large as this year's as we have had more time to plan, and added an outside bar, food trucks and lots more. The first one had a huge help from the Weyburn Credit Union to put it all together. This year we are putting it in our hands to bring the community together, to support the team.”
He said anyone who purchases a ticket can attend as it is included in the game day activities.
“We will have the ability to purchase tickets when you get to the gate,” said Burns.
The pre-game banner ceremony will hold a special significance this year.
“We will be showcasing our Division Winners & SJHL Finalists banners in the rafters before puck drop to highlight the amazing season the Red Wings had,” said Burns.
There will be a Kids Zone for the youth.
“We are bringing in three different shooting lanes [hockey, soccer and football] for the kids,” said Burns. “There will also be things for the little kids like chalk, bubbles, etc. to reach all ages. The corn hole is also available for kids, and adults to play.”
Fans will have multiple chances to win, with door prizes up for grabs.
“Canadian Tire will be giving away mini sticks to the first 100-200 fans,” said Burns. “We will also have some Red Wings tattoos, stickers and more for the kids. As well as the guaranteed 50/50 at $7,500 during the game which can also be purchased online from our website on game day.”
The event includes a DJ party, food trucks, an outside bar and corn hole.
