Red Wings climb up after four straight wins to begin 2025

The first full week of 2025 is in the books, and with the CJHL Trade Deadline now past, teams continue to jockey up & down the tight standings.

The SportsCage SJHL Power Rankings are created by having contributors independently rank each team from No. 1 to No. 12, then averaging out the scores.

1. Melfort Mustangs (29-5-0)  -

The Mustangs rebounded after having their 17 game win streak snapped, with a convincing win over the Terriers at home.  Melfort were quiet on Deadline Day, just welcoming back netminder Madden Mullawka from the Regina Pats

Next Up: Wednesday vs. Kindersley / Friday @ Yorkton

Top Scorer: Reilly Kotai - 44 points in 33 games

2. Weyburn Red Wings (19-10-2) +1

2025 has been good so far for the Red Wings winning their first four out of the Holiday break scoring 19 goals in the process to put them one point back of the division lead with games in hand.   Addition of WHL veteran Matthew Edwards adds even more experience up front

Up Next: Tuesday vs. La Ronge / Friday @ Melville / Saturday vs. La Ronge

Top Scorer:  Ethan DeKay & Jerome Maharaj with 43 points each

3. Flin Flon Bombers (23-9-2-1)  +1

A three win week including a road weekend sweep in Humboldt has the Bombers continue to roll as their point streak has reached 19 games AND they landed the top defenceman on the trade market acquiring Hounds captain Liam Hunks on deadline day.

Up next: Friday & Saturday vs. Kindersley

Top Scorer: Ryder Ringor - 39 points in 35 games

4. Yorkton Terriers (22-12-1)  -2

The Terriers first real stumble greeted them in the first week of 2025 with losses in four straight but exploded on Sunday to gain positives. Five goals or more against in their last three games will be something that will want to be brought down for a team that didn’t make a move on deadline day.

Next Up:  Friday vs. Melfort / Saturday vs. Notre Dame  (Hockey Day in Sask in Canora)

Top Scorer: Keenan Ingram - 45 points in 33 games

5. Battlefords North Stars (19-12-3-2) -

An up and down inconsistent busy week for the North Stars saw them go 2-2 including a win over Melfort to snap their lengthy win streak. Four of their next five at home.  20 year old Michael Carter was added to add some experience and offense to their back-end.

Up next:  Friday vs. Humboldt / Saturday @ Humboldt

Top Scorer: Nikita Ivashchenko - 36 points in 32 games

6.  Kindersley Klippers (19-15-1-1) -

The Klippers took care of business at home sweeping the Nipawin Hawks over the weekend outsourcing them 9-1. The acquisition of 20 year old Mason Bueckert helps bolster their chances of not only clinching a playoff spot, but the Nutrien Division.

Up Next: Wednesday @ Melfort / Friday & Saturday @ Flin Flon

Top Scorer: Mason Bueckert - 34 points in 33 games

7.  Melville Millionaires (16-18-2-1) -

The Millionaires put two decent performances together over the weekend but only one win to show for it.  Goals and who’ll score them is still a question mark for a team that welcomed three newcomers to their squad on Jan 10th.

This Week:  Friday vs. Weyburn / Saturday vs. Estevan

Top Scorer: Jadon Iyogun - 26 points in 33 games

8. Humboldt Broncos  (15-15-2) -

The Broncos are still looking for their first win of 2025 after dropping their first three tight games out of the break. The additions of Dazza Mitchell, Cade Kennedy, Liam Rodman should help and will insert plenty of Junior experience.

Up Next:  Friday @ Battlefords / Saturday vs. Battlefords

Top Scorer: Jacob Strizzi - 40 points in 30 games

9.  Estevan Bruins (11-16-3-1) +1

A quiet week on the ice with just a home loss to Melville, but a busy week off of it making several moves ahead of deadline.  The Bruins are a much younger team now but the goal is still very much to earn a ticket into the final eight.

Up Next:  Wednesday & Friday vs. La Ronge / Saturday @ Melville

Top Scorer: Ewan Rennie - 28 points in 31 games

10. La Ronge Ice Wolves (15-18-1) -1

No games this week for the Ice Wolves because of a postponement but they were also busy at the deadline re-tooling dealing away leading scorer Mason Bueckert for a big return package. They finish with five road games to wrap up January as they try to chip away back up to a playoff spot.

Up Next: Tuesday @ Weyburn, Wednesday @ Estevan, Friday @ Estevan, Saturday @ Weyburn

Top Scorer:  Cole Thomas - 28 points in 34 games

11. Notre Dame Hounds (10-20-1-2) -

Hounds began 2025 with a solid two wins in three games including both wins coming on the road to put them nine points of a playoff spot. They did deal away captain Liam Hunks up to Flin Flon, but with Marko Djordjevic and Spencer Borsos sticking around, this team will be a tough out each night.

Up next: Wednesday vs. Humboldt / Saturday vs. Yorkton (Hockey Day in Sask. in Canora)

Top Scorer: Marko Djordjevic - 33 points in 33 games

12.  Nipawin Hawks  (7-24-3-2)   -

Five losses to begin their second half by a combined 26-8 total isn’t ideal after a promising end to the first half.  The Hawks got a bit younger on the back-end with the dealing of Henry Smith as young D have a chance to play a more prominent role.

This Week:   No Games

Top Scorer:  Carter Anderson - 24 points in 36 games
