The Yorkton Terriers are set to retire Ed Zawatsky’s number 14 in a pregame ceremony on Saturday when they host the La Ronge Ice Wolves at the Westland Insurance Arena.
“You know Darrell Spelay has the single most total points in league history, but not many may know that Eddie has the single most points scored in single SJHL season ever by a Terrier and then he came back and coached some successful Terrier teams, so we felt as an organization we wanted to start recognizing some our alumni again” said Terrier alumni and current board member Grant Ottenbreit.
Zawatsky played two full seasons with the Terriers, registering 108 goals and 133 assists for 241 points in 122 career regular season games.
During his second season, the Langenburg-born forward netted 158 points which is the ninth-highest-scoring season in SJHL history
“He was such a deceptive player, he drove a lot of the offence that year as I think he had like 90 more points than our next leading scorer, he was so skilled and he made everyone around him just that much better”, Ottenbreit added.
Zawatsky then received a scholarship to Colorado College where he would play 4 seasons in the NCAA before embarking on a lengthy pro career in the ECHL and Germany.
He then returned and began as an assistant coach in the 2002-03 season with the Terriers before taking on the Head Coach role from 2004-2010 helping the team capture two league titles including leading them to a berth in the 2006 RBC Cup Final.
