SJHL POWER RANKINGS: Melfort Mustangs stand tall to begin 2025

The defending Melfort Mustangs’ lengthy win streak has them still atop as we begin 2025.

The SportsCage SJHL Power Rankings are created by having contributors independently rank each team from No. 1 to No. 12, then averaging out the scores. 


1. Melfort Mustangs (28-4-0)  -

The Mustangs picked up right where they left off before the break, with two shutout wins over Melville Millionaires in two very entertaining hockey games to improve their win streak to 16. Kristian Coombs with 35 saves on 35 shots over the two to pull into league-lead with three shutouts.

Next Up: Tuesday vs. Battlefords / Friday vs. La Ronge / Saturday vs. Yorkton

Top Scorer: Reilly Kotai - 43 points in 31 games


2. Yorkton Terriers (21-10-1)  -

The Terriers got to be pretty pleased with a 3 and 1 record out of the break despite having their eight game win streak snapped on Sunday.  Keenan Ingram is still red-hot with six goals and 11 points in the four games this week.

Next Up:  Wednesday @ Weyburn  / Saturday @ Melfort / Sunday vs. Battlefords

3. Weyburn Red Wings (19-10-2) +1

A couple big divisional wins for the Red Wings out of the break kicks off an important second half. With the trade of Dazza Mitchell, Angelo Zol became the sole full-time starter and he excelled over the weekend including a shutout on Saturday night.

Up Next: Wednesday vs. Yorkton / Saturday vs. Notre Dame

Top Scorer: Ethan DeKay - 39 points in 28 games


4. Flin Flon Bombers (20-9-2-1)  -1

The Bombers point streak is now up to 16 straight games after a split in their home and home with La Ronge.  14 goals in two games is a great way to start off the second half with some depth scoring.

Up next: Wednesday vs. Nipawin / Saturday & Sunday @ Humboldt

Top Scorer: Ryder Ringor - 36 points in 32 games


5. Battlefords North Stars (17-10-3-2) -

A two win weekend to kick off 2025 for the North Stars has them atop of the division as the second half begins. Balanced scoring and great goaltending from Justen Maric will be key.

Up next:  Tuesday vs. Melfort / Wednesday vs. Notre Dame / Saturday @ Melville / Sunday @ Yorkton

Top Scorer: Nikita Ivashchenko - 34 points in 32 games


6.  Kindersley Klippers (17-15-1) +1

Klippers kicked off their second with a overtime win over Humboldt to separate themselves a little bit more themselves even more from the Broncos for the final playoff spot.  A heavy 16 game road regular season schedule is ahead for the Klips.

7.  Melville Millionaires (15-17-2-1) -1

After a good stretch heading into the break, the Moneymen dropped their first four games after the break including despite solid efforts two shutout losses to Melfort.  Defensively, they’ll be sound under Doug Johnson but offense is a question mark for a club who lost another sniper in Ryan Roethke after Christmas.

This Week:  Jan 10th @ Estevan / Jan 11th vs. Battlefords

8. Humboldt Broncos  (15-15-2) -

The acquisition of veteran netminder Dazza Mitchell should help solidify the goaltending position, and help bring their goals against down which has been higher than they would like as of late. 


Up Next: Saturday & Sunday vs. Flin Flon

Top Scorer: Jacob Strizzi - 40 points in 28 games


9. La Ronge Ice Wolves (15-18-1) -

After a disappointing 10-4 loss at home to kick off the New Year, the Ice Wolves pulled off a big shootout win at the Whitney Forum to pull closer to the final playoff spot. This Friday’s Trade Deadline will show if they want to push for a spot or rebuild in 2025. The next seven are on the road.

10.  Estevan Bruins (11-15-3-1) -

The Bruins dropped both of their games out of the break and another team that will need to decide what they want to do come Friday’s deadline. They do play seven of their next eight at home which they’re always tough.

Up Next:  Friday vs. Melville

Top Scorers:  Kent Moors - 26 points in 26 games


11. Notre Dame Hounds (8-19-1-2) -1

The Hounds are the only team to not have begun their second half schedule yet which they will with three road games this week. 

Up next: Tuesday @ Kindersley / Wednesday @ Battlefords / Saturday @ Weyburn

Top Scorer: Marko Djordjevic - 29 points in 30 games


12.  Nipawin Hawks  (7-21-3-2)   -

After some promising results before their break, the Hawks dropped both weekend games to a hot North Stars squad.  The young squad will look to continue to take more positive strides in the second half led by their goaltending.
