The Saskatoon Blades have acquired 17-year-old forward Kazden Mathies in a trade with Seattle Thunderbirds that will see the Blades send a 2027 fifth-round pick to the Thunderbirds.
Mathies, a Martensville native, was drafted by the Thunderbirds in the second round (38th overall) of the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft.
In 31 games this season, Mathies has five goals, two assists, and eight penalty minutes. The 5-foot-11 winger has 94 career WHL games, scoring 14 goals and four assists for 18 points.
Associate manager Steve Hildebrand is excited to see Mathies in a Blades jersey.
“At the start of the season, we were looking to add to our 2007 forward group and had the opportunity to do so. Kazden is a cerebral player with an offensive upside who can play both centre and wing.
The left-handed shot is expected to join the Blades on their upcoming three-game road trip in Alberta this week. Saskatoon begins their trip Tuesday at the Peavey Mart Centrium against the Red Deer Rebels, followed by a game the next night against the Edmonton Oil Kings before their final game on the trip Friday versus the Calgary Hitmen.
