The Battlefords North Stars of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League announced they have hired alumnus Martin Smith as the new Head Coach.
"Martin came on board, attended practices, and joined the bench, getting comfortable with the players and becoming part of the team early. The team wanted him, so we got together, had good conversations, pursued Martin, and he became our head coach. We couldn’t be more excited," said North Stars President Kyle Kellgren.
Martin will join Assistant Coach/Assistant General Manager Owen Lamb on the bench and work alongside newly named General Manager Wylie Riendeau.
Smith started playing for the North Stars in the 1987-88 season, finishing his SJHL career with 142 goals and 207 assists for 349 points in 229 games. He played in the ECHL, BHL, and WCHL before returning home to the Battlefords.
Lamb was acting Head Coach for the North Stars after Gary Childerhouse stepped down for personal reasons at the start of the season.
The North Stars return to action this Wednesday and Thursday, on the road in Wilcox for a couple of games with the Notre Dame Hounds.
