Moose Jaw senior girls volleyball league teams win regionals, advance to provincials

Vanier claims title as 4A regional host, Cornerstone advances in 2A, Rouleau moves on in 1A, with provincial championships next weekend

MOOSEJAWTODAY.COM -- Three teams from the Moose Jaw High Schools Athletic Association senior girls volleyball league advanced to their respective provincial championships with wins at regionals on Saturday.

The reigning provincial bronze medalist Vanier Spirits booked their spot in the 4A girls tournament La Ronge with an undefeated run through their regional at Vanier.

The Spirits didn’t drop a set through their five games, first defeating Regina Johnson 25-20, 25-9 and downing Fort Qu’Appelle 25-19, 25-21 in the round robin to advance to the playoffs. There, Vanier booked their provincial berth with a 25-19, 25-21 win over Regina Luther and then claimed the regional title with a 25-15, 25-9 win over Lumsden.

The Central Cyclones also saw action at the Vanier regional but didn’t make the playoffs, falling 25-23, 25-15 to Lumsden and 25-12, 25-20 to Regina Luther in their round robin.

The Cornerstone Christian School Falcons advanced to provincials for the first time in school history, sweeping their four games at their 2A regional in Rocanville.

Cornerstone reached the playoffs with a 25-10, 25-18 win over Redville and 25-17, 25-19 victory over Montmartre. They then faced the tournament hosts in the semifinal and took a 25-13, 25-13 win before capping their regional run with an unbeaten record, defeating Gravelbourg 25-23, 25-21.

The 2A girls' provincial championship will take place in Outlook..

The Rouleau Rebels made it a perfect weekend for Moose Jaw league teams with four straight wins in their 1A regional in Lemberg. The Rebels took a 25-12, 25-4 win over Lipton and a 25-9, 25-12 victory over Ogema to reach the playoffs, where they defeated Lemberg 25-10, 25-23 and finished things off with a 25-22, 25-20 win over the defending provincial champs from Lampman. 

Next up is 1A provincials in Allan and Colonsay.

At the 3A girls regional in Carnduff, the Briercrest Christian Academy Cougars split their round robin games and missed the playoffs by a tiebreaker. The Cougars won their opener 27-25, 20-25, 15-11 over Esterhazy, but dropped a 22-25, 25-22, 15-12 decision to Kipling to see their regional run come to an end.

The 5A regional in Yorkton saw the Peacock Toilers drop both of their round robin games before falling in the first round of the playoffs. Peacock lost 25-21, 25-16 to Estevan and 25-11, 25-15 to Balgonie in their preliminary round games before falling 26-24, 25-10 to Yorkton Regional in quarter-finals.
